Transplantation Direct - September issue

txd

The September issue of Transplantation Direct contains articles in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation, as well as a methodological report. In kidney transplantation we have articles dealing with: quality of care, bilateral renal parenchymal urine leak after pediatric en bloc transplantation, MSC effects on transfusion-associated sensitization (involvement of transition and regulatory B cells), donor-derived cell-free DNA identification of antibody-mediated rejection, improvement of graft function using antithrombin perfluorocarbon nanoparticles, and long-term results from an efficacy and safety trial using Tofacitinib-based immunosuppression. In liver transplantation, we have an article on the identification and validation of predictive risk factors and models. Related to post-pancreas transplant graft function/survival, there is a report on the impact of deceased donor cardiac arrest time. Methodologically, we have a posttransplant immune monitoring report on anti-HLA donor-specific IgG subclass and C1q-binding evolution. We hope that you find this issue of special interest!

The CTRMS is hosting the 2018 CTRMS Special Workshop on Enabling Technologies. This inaugural special workshop will take place on October 12-14, 2018 at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa in Tucson, Arizona.

At this two-day workshop, key opinion leaders and experts in the fields of bio-imaging, cell targeting, oxygenation, and viability and potency assays (especially for encapsulated cells), will come together to present and discuss cutting-edge research and developments in these key areas and to address remaining critical gaps in encapsulated cell therapies and tissue engineering. Register today to save your spot at this exciting Special Workshop on Enabling Technologies.

We look forward to seeing you there! Please follow this link to our registration page and make sure you renew or join the society to receive the discounted rate. https://www.ctrms.ca/cgi/page.cgi/26/register.html

Transplantation Journal - Highlighted Article

Submitted by Dr Joel Thomas Adler, Editorial Fellow, Transplantation.

Trends in Early Hospital Readmission After Kidney Transplantation, 2002 to 2014: A Population-Based Multicenter Cohort Study
Naylor KL, Knoll GA, Allen B, et al.
Transplantation. 2018;102:e171-e179.

Early hospital readmission is considered both a marker of increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs, as well as a quality metric. Using longitudinal, population-based databases in Canada, Naylor et al studied if early hospital readmission incidence has increased concomitant with worsening severity of illness. Defined as readmission within the first 30 days of discharge, the authors found that the cumulative incidence did not increase despite an increasingly ill transplant population. However, approximately 20% did have an early hospital readmission; this serves as a target for continued study and improvement.

New kidney donation scheme starts in October after change in Hong Kong law allows strangers to donate organs to patients

August 31 - From October, kidney transplant patients whose family members are incompatible donors can join a scheme that will speed up the time taken to get a new organ. The paired organ donation arrangement, made legal after Hong Kong passed an amendment to its Human Organ Transplant Ordinance last month, allows a donor-patient pair who may not be a match for each other to donate organs to another donor-patient pair and vice versa, so that patients on both sides get the transplants they need.
